Despite Campaign Pledge to Serve as an ‘Independent,’ Arizona Senator Mark Kelly Backs Pathway to Change the Filibuster

Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) announced on Wednesday that he will support a change to eliminate the Senate filibuster, despite his campaign pledge to work as an “independent.”

In a statement, Kelly detailed his openness to give one party unilateral power in an effort to protect “the vote-by-mail system.”

“If campaign finance and voting rights reforms are blocked again this week, I will support the proposed changes to pass them with a majority vote. Protecting the vote-by-mail system used by a majority of Arizonans and getting dark money out of our elections is too important to let fall victim to Washington dysfunction,” the Democrat explained.

Far-left members of the Democratic Party have increasingly called for a change in the Senate rules, eliminating the 60-vote threshold for some pieces of legislation. Largely, the efforts are due to lack of support for key pieces of President Joe Biden’s agenda among members of the legislative body.

On the other hand, Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who also campaigned to be a moderate lawmaker, opposed the highly-consequential move.

“Coward Mark Kelly has finally admitted that he would rather appease progressive activists and Democrat leadership in Washington than stand up for Arizonans,” said NRSC Press Secretary Katharine Cooksey. “Kelly is no moderate. He is a far-Left senator who will do whatever Joe Biden and Washington Democrat leadership tell him to in order to pass a radically liberal agenda.”

In fact, Kelly has overwhelmingly followed Democratic Party leadership in potentially controversial issues. According to data compiled by ProPublica, Kelly votes with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) 96 percent of the time.

“Of course Mark Kelly was going to cave to Biden and Schumer, he always does. By nuking the filibuster, Senator Kelly shows that he’s a danger to Arizona and to America. He is disgusting and he’s got to go,” said Blake Masters, a GOP candidate for Senate and potential Kelly challenger.

Kelly is directed by “Democrat Central”, and his “obeying” will result in a short political career.
Why one would wish to harpoon himself is curious.
But this manufactured, McCain like, carpetbagging Arizona Senator has declared himself, siding against the direction of the citizens who elected him. Perhaps his choice of party is his undoing ?
