The Arizona Senate held a public briefing on Thursday to update residents of the state on the ongoing forensic audit of roughly 2.1 million ballots in Maricopa County.
Leaders of the legislative chamber heard testimony from the vendors hired to conduct the audit, Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan and CyFIR founder Ben Cotton.
In the hearing, Logan suggested the audit should include door-to-door canvassing to help explain possible discrepancies found in the voter registration rolls.
Senate President Karen Fann (R-Prescott) also took aim at opponents of the audit that claim the examination of the ballots is strictly “to overturn the election.”
“This is not about overturning the election. This has never been about anything other than election integrity. This is the epitome of what America stands for, and if we do not have confidence in our electoral process, then everything we do in life is jeopardized,” Fann said.
Additionally, the highest ranking Senate Republican argued that lawmakers have a duty to their constituents to honor their concerns.
“Our voters are constituents. [We must] answer those questions and either confirm what they were afraid of or thought or heard, or that we prove that those things were not true so that they could go back to the polls and they could vote with confidence knowing that their ballot is sacred,” she claimed.
Further, Fann argued that results will give lawmakers the information needed to possibly tweak or change current laws.
“We have accomplished this because the Constitution gives us the right to subpoena information for the purpose of passing laws. And with that information gives us the tools to be able to either tweak existing legislation or create new legislation to make sure that the sanctity is always there,” she detailed.
The briefing comes after Democrats on the House Oversight and Reform Committee announced that they are launching an investigation into the forensic audit.
