Filings: Major Left-Wing Nonprofits Funneled Tens of Millions to China in 2021

Two of the largest left-wing nonprofit organizations in the country collectively sent at least $39 million to China in 2021, according to IRS tax filings.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sent a total of $30 million to various Chinese organizations and government entities, which included $2.5 million to China’s National Health Commission and $1.4 million to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The Ford Foundation sent another $9.3 million, which included donations to at least three universities that are under the direct supervision of the government’s defense industry agency.

The fact that American groups are directly sending money to Chinese entities, which may include funding ultimately goes towards China’s military as it continues to develop and employ new technology to work directly against the United States’ interests, has led to some lawmakers calling for action against such nonprofits.

“If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that we need to heavily scrutinize every American dollar that goes to CCP-affiliated entities,” said Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.). “Any American foundation contributing to causes that advance CCP-aligned interests in the developing world has serious questions to answer.”

The Gates Foundation justified some of its funding of China by labeling it as “global health and development public awareness and analysis,” including the $2.5 million it gave to the National Health Commission. The donations from the Ford Foundation focused on a wider array of topics, including global warming, finance, and education; one grant of $150,000 was given to Beijing Normal University to fund research on the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Belt and Road Initiative, which is the CCP’s plan to infiltrate and subvert other nations by taking over their infrastructures from within.

“The Ford Foundation is funding research for Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative, the Party’s strategy to overtake America,” said Michael Sobolik, a fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council. “Meanwhile, Bill Gates funded global health projects inside China while protecting the CCP from accountability. It is simply unacceptable for Americans to aid our adversary, yet this embarrassing behavior remains persistent and pervasive—from professional sports and universities to Wall Street and wealthy foundations.”
