Music Spotlight: Cicely Mason

Cicely Mason

Cicely Mason is an American singer/songwriter from Milan, Tennessee. She comes from a singing family and is the youngest of six children. One of her earliest memories is singing for a talent show.

“It wasn’t for the competition. I just wanted to sing,” she recalled.

She sang “Jesus Loves Me” and when she saw the teachers who were the judges, crying, young Mason thought she had done something wrong.

“I kept on singing and unbeknownst to me, at the end of the talent competition when they were announcing the winners is that I was the overall winner grand prize winner. I released then that (singing) was my God-given gift to use to bless people,” Mason said.

After that, she was regularly invited to sing at church and other local events. Country music was often played, and that’s where she was exposed to it.

Her love for all music started at an early age, but the singer said she “started listening to country music on the radio” in her room and “was so enamored by it.”

Mason was a neo-jazz, rhythm, and Christian singer early in her career. She sang at the Dove Awards and Stellar Awards and performed on BET. At that time, being a black country artist didn’t seem possible, but she was content as long as she was singing.

Besides being a soulful singer, Mason is a songwriter. It is important that the music she puts out music that stirs people’s spirits.

“My Music is about a message. God blesses me to write from that place where everybody can relate to the lyrics that are being and telling a message. It’s telling a story and it’s identifiable,” she said.

Now, having gone through a rebranding, Mason is putting forth her efforts in the country music scene.

Her first country single, “Country Girl,” has hints of gospel, soul, and funk in its production. It’s a song that makes you want to move and showcases Mason’s mega vocals.

Now Mason has released a more autobiographical, lyric-based, country song, “Down Home Country.” With lyrics She knows how to treat her neighbors right/she unselfish/ She lives a peaceful life/ She loves everybody/ Big city and streetlights/ Won’t change her life/ Cause she’s country, downhome country she tells her truths in this personal song.

To be honest, it really doesn’t matter what genre Mason sings in. The basis for gospel, R&B, blues, jazz, and country is music from the soul, and that is where she shines. Mason was born to sing.

Mason is produced and managed by PacPmusic. Follow her on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and all streaming platforms.
