Arizona Senate President Karen Fann Named Chair of American Legislative Exchange Council

Arizona Senate President Karen Fann (R-Prescott) on Wednesday was named chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

Fann, who served as treasurer of the organization in 2021, was awarded the position at the group’s annual policy summit in San Diego.

“Let’s move forward. 2022 is going to be a great year!” Fann said at the event, according to a tweet from the Arizona Senate GOP.

The group that Fann will lead is an “organization of state legislators dedicated to the principles of limited government, free markets and federalism,” according to its website.

ALEC is composed of nearly one-quarter of the country’s state legislators.

During the event, lawmakers attended multiple workshops and speeches, including some given by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.

As chair, Fann will advance the mission of the organization to assist lawmakers in sharing “important policy perspectives to ensure economic security and opportunity in their communities.”

Recently, Fann announced that she will not seek re-election and retire from the Arizona State Legislature when her current term ends in 2023.

“It has been a privilege to advocate on behalf of Arizona citizens in my twelve years at the State Legislature and the honor of a lifetime to serve as Senate President. I look forward to a successful session in 2022 advancing policies that benefit all Arizonans, and then enjoying the life my husband and I have built for ourselves in retirement with our family,” Fann said in a statement at the time.

The highest-ranking Republican and second female President in the history of the Arizona Senate, who was a key supporter of the Arizona election audit, has served 28 years in state and local government positions.
