Sen. Richard Blumenthal Urges Biden Administration to Declare ‘Public Health Emergency’ After Supreme Court’s Decision Overturning Roe v. Wade

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) was at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic on Tuesday in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he urged Biden Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to declare a “public health emergency” in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that returns issues about abortion to the states.

“We’re pressing President Biden to use whatever authority he has, to the maximum extent to explore the possibility of a national emergency that would enable telemedicine prescription, which could then result in medication abortion through the mail,” Blumenthal said, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Blumenthal, who accompanied Becerra on his visit, added, “Frankly, we’re in a public health crisis. We’re in an emergency.”

During a roundtable discussion with Becerra, Blumenthal, Governor Ned Lamont (D-CT), and pro-abortion lawmakers at the abortion clinic, Amanda Skinner, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England, also called for the declaration of a public health emergency.

“Here at Planned Parenthood, we are devastated, we are heartbroken, and we are ready to fight like hell,’’ Skinner said. “We know that abortion bans disproportionately harm Black women, Latino people, indigenous people, other people of color, people who have low incomes and people who live in rural communities.’’

Becerra complimented Lamont for supporting abortion in Connecticut.

Lamont recently recorded a video pitch to urge businesses to relocate to Connecticut, where opportunities to have abortions are plentiful. In his video, the governor referred to his state as “family friendly,” though high taxes are crushing both businesses and consumers.

“Governor Lamont, I’ve got to say, were every state like Connecticut … we would be far better off,’’ the HHS secretary said to the governor, according to the Hartford Courant.

“What the Supreme Court did, it took a 50-year-old right and flushed it down the toilet,’’ Becerra said, adding the Biden administration is “looking at a number of things that we can do … We want to make sure that what we say we will do, we will do. We don’t want to spread any misinformation.”

Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the pro-life Family Institute of Connecticut, noted in a social media post that some in Connecticut say “legal abortion will always be a thing” in the state.

“We don’t know what the future holds,” Wolfgang continued. “But just remember: They said the same thing about Roe v. Wade.’’
